On 7 November 2024, a UNIDROIT delegation comprising Deputy Secretary-General Anna Veneziano and Senior Legal Officer William Brydie-Watson visited the Faculty of Law of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to strengthen future potential collaboration between the two institutes. At the beginning of the visit, the delegation had a fruitful meeting with the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the CUHK Professor Ciao Xi and Assistant Professor Yueming Yan.
The meeting with faculty was followed by a seminar delivered by members of the UNIDROIT delegation. The event was well-attended by undergraduate and postgraduate students of CUHK. After introducing UNIDROIT’s mission, membership and partners worldwide, Deputy Secretary-General Anna Veneziano gave a brief overview of the conventions and soft law instruments developed by UNIDROIT over the years. These include the 2001 Cape Town Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment and the Protocols thereto on Matters Specific to Aircraft Equipment, Railway Rolling Stock and Mining, Agricultural, and Construction Equipment, the 2009 Geneva Convention on Substantive Rules for Intermediated Securities, and the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law (2023). The seminar then focused on a more in-depth presentation by Deputy Secretary-General Veneziano of the UNIDROIT Principles on International Commercial Contracts (2016). In the second part of the seminar, UNIDROIT Senior Legal Officer William Brydie-Watson provided an overview of the work of the UNIDROIT Academy, with a particular focus on the recently established UNIDROIT Asian Transnational Law Centre (ATLC), and the UNIDROIT Scholarship, Internship and Research Programme.
UNIDROIT’s visit to CUHK was an important first step in strengthening cooperation, with a view to future cooperation in relation to academic research in areas of mutual interest and providing internship and research opportunities at UNIDROIT for CUHK students, alumni and faculty members.
