On 11 November 2022, UNIDROIT Secretary-General Ignacio Tirado delivered the keynote speech on “Rule of Law and Sustainable Development” for the Rule of Law Congress in Hong Kong, China. Organised by the Department of Justice of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, the Rule of Law Congress was the final event of the Hong Kong 2022 Legal Week and brought together hundreds of diplomatic and government representatives, legal experts and private sector practitioners.
In his keynote address, Secretary-General Tirado examined the concept of the rule of law and how transnational commercial and international private law contributes to the rule of law and sustainability. He spoke on the global, transparent and all-inclusive process utilised by UNIDROIT in the formulation of its international texts and UNIDROIT’s contributions to multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Secretary-General highlighted several UNIDROIT instruments that are particularly well placed to support the SDGs, including the Cape Town Convention (and its Luxembourg Rail Protocol and Mining, Agriculture and Construction Protocol), the Legal Guide on Contract Farming, the Legal Guide on Agricultural Land Investment Contracts, the Legal Structure of Agricultural Enterprises project, as well as UNIDROIT’s future projects on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence in Global Value Chains, and Voluntary Carbon Credits and Private Law.
