The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Faculty of Law (HUJI). This agreement was signed on 21 January 2025 during a working session on compliance with transnational commercial law treaties, a project to which both institutions are contributing. Professor Anna Veneziano, Deputy Secretary-General of UNIDROIT and Professor Tomer Broude, Dean of HUJI, alongside Professor Jeffrey Wool, a fellow at both institutions, took part in the signing ceremony in Cambridge. The Memorandum of Understanding establishes a framework for close collaboration between the two institutions, with a focus on various academic initiatives such as courses, conferences, and research projects. In line with the agreement, and subject to available resources, UNIDROIT will be connected to and involved in (a) an LLM specialisation in global business law at HUJI, and (b) a potential project in due course on global business law with HUJI involving leading Universities in agreed countries in the region. Moreover, the Memorandum outlines a strengthened integration of UNIDROIT’s instruments and projects within the academic offerings of HUJI.
Professor Tomer Broude, Dean of HUJI, added: “I am delighted to establish this new and exciting relationship between UNIDROIT and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Faculty of Law, with the tremendous local, regional and international potential that it presents. Both institutions were founded at the same historical moment, a century ago (1925-1926). We share visions of the promotion of knowledge, human advancement and a broader understanding of the rule of law and its balance with solidarity, commercial freedoms and constraints, and the role of transnational legal harmonisation in global society. We are proud to join the international group of academic partners of UNIDROIT and look forward to cooperation”Professor Ignacio Tirado, Secretary General of UNIDROIT, commented: “I am very pleased that we are formally establishing a cooperation with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Faculty of Law, in the framework of the UNIDROIT Academy. We look forward to promoting a better understanding of the benefits of UNIDROIT’s instruments on transnational commercial law and to very promising programmes for teaching, academic research, and further collaboration in this field”.
