On 7 November 2023, UNIDROIT Legal Consultant Ms Theodora Kostoula represented the UNIDROIT Secretariat at the “Emerging Strength in International Arbitration” Conference organised by the Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (SHIAC – Shanghai International Arbitration Center) in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China.
The conference was part of the 2023 Shanghai Arbitration Week and brought together stakeholders from across Asia and representatives from international institutes. It featured the launch of the new SHIAC Arbitration Rules, the SHIAC Digital Intelligence Platform and a Pilot Project on Standardization of One-stop International Commercial Dispute Resolution Services, and was followed by roundtable discussions and presentations on emerging issues in international arbitration.
Ms Kostoula participated in Roundtable I on “The Evolution and Integration of Arbitration Rules”, moderated by Mr Yao Hongming (Deputy Secretary General, SHIAC). She presented the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law (DAPL Principles) and discussed how they can contribute to the evolution and development of arbitration. With a focus on the key concepts and rules of the DAPL Principles, Ms Kostoula addressed the importance of the DAPL Principles in navigating the private law aspects of digital assets and highlighted their role in providing guidance in related disputes in arbitration.
The roundtable featured five other speakers: Datut Sundra Rajoo (Director of Asian Arbitration Centre), Du Tao (Dean and Professor of ECUPL International Law School), Hunag Zhijin (Director of Arbitration and ADR North Asia, ICC), Steve Kim (Secretary General of Korean Commercial Arbitration Board International), Yang Ling (Deputy Secretary General of Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre), and Zhang Cunyuan (Head of Singapore International Arbitration Centre).
