On 27 September 2024, UNIDROIT took part in a symposium entitled “Persons and Things in the Digitalised World: The Private Law of Cybernetic Avatars in 2050,” hosted by Chuo University in Japan. The event focused on the impact of digitalisation on private law, with particular attention on the legal treatment of avatars and digital assets in the metaverse.
The symposium brought together experts in private law from various jurisdictions to discuss the evolution of fundamental concepts such as “persons” and “things” in the context of immersive virtual environments. UNIDROIT Secretary-General Professor Ignacio Tirado delivered the keynote speech, “Forward Looking from the Watchtower: Some Reflections on the Evolution of Private Law”. He explored the challenges and opportunities posed by the growing use of digital technologies and avatars within private legal frameworks and introduced relevant UNIDROIT instruments. Other participants included Professor Charles W. Mooney Jr from the University of Pennsylvania, Professor Kelvin Low from the University of Hong Kong, Mr Timothy Chan from the National University of Singapore, Mr Hamza Hameed from Space & Connectivity, UNIDROIT Principal Legal Officer Professor Meiling Huang, and Professor Eliza Mik from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The event concluded with closing remarks from Professor Souichirou Kozuka of Gakushuin University, who summarised the key discussions and emphasised the importance of continued research to adapt private law to the challenges posed by digital transformation.
