UNIDROIT participates in a training course on the ‘Protection of Cultural Heritage’ aimed at representatives of ASEAN countries

The Italian Carabinieri for the Protection of Cultural Property, together with the Centre of Excellence for Stability Police Units (CoESPU), organised in Vicenza (Italy) a training course on the ‘Protection of Cultural Heritage’ held from 11 to 25 March 2025. The initiative was funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) and was aimed at ASEAN Member States.

UNIDROIT was invited to present its instruments on the international protection of cultural property, the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects and the Model Provisions on State Ownership of Undiscovered Cultural Objects. Ms Marina Schneider, Principal Legal Officer and Treaties Depositary, focused on the implementation of the 1995 Convention for the States Parties to the Convention (Cambodia and Lao DPR) and on the procedure for accession. She also stressed the complementarity between the 1995 UNIDROIT and the 1970 UNESCO Conventions as several countries are Parties to neither instrument.

The participants came from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Viet Nam. The Culture and Information Division of the Secretariat of ASEAN was also represented, and it was an opportunity to discuss possible cooperation in this field with the UNIDROIT Secretariat and the newly established Asian Transnational Law Centre.
