UNIDROIT participates in a seminar on “Documentation and liability against the illicit circulation of cultural objects” at the University of Tor Vergata in Rome

On 26 March 2025, UNIDROIT was invited by the Department of History, Cultural Heritage, Education and Society – University of Rome Tor Vergata and the Thematic Interest Group ‘Cultural Diversity and International and European Law’ of the Italian Society of International Law (SIDI) to an open seminar (in presence and online) entitled “ ‘Synergy of professions for cultural heritage’ – Documentation and liability against the illicit circulation of cultural objects: recent developments in the international, European and domestic legal framework”.

Ms Marina Schneider, Principal Legal Officer and Treaties Depositary at UNIDROIT, presented the synergy between the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects, which remains highly topical, and European Union’s instruments such as the Directive 2014/60/EU on the return of cultural objects unlawfully removed from the territory of a Member State and the Regulation 2019/880/EU on the introduction and the import of cultural goods. It was also an opportunity to introduce the project on Private art collections – orphan cultural objects.

The participants were welcomed by Prof. Lucia Ceci, Director of the Department of History, Cultural Heritage, Education and Society and the seminar was introduced by Prof. Federica Mucci, University of Rome Tor Vergata, and presentations were made by Prof. Manlio Frigo, University of Milan, on ‘Post-colonial Restitutions’, Prof. Stefania Mabellini, University of Rome Tor Vergata, on ‘The art market and the difficult balance between individual rights and collective interests’, Prof. Federica Mucci on ‘The EU Regulation 2019/880 in the context of the 1970 UNESCO Convention’, Prof. Sara Pugliese, University of Naples Parthenope, on ‘The impact of European regulation of digital services on the online sale of works of art’, Prof. Vittorio Mainetti, University of Milan, on ‘Cybersecurity and Protection of Cultural Heritage’ and Stefania Bisaglia and Lia Montereale (Ministry of Culture) on ‘The forthcoming full applicability of EU Regulation 2019/880’.
