UNIDROIT hosts the inaugural session of the ATLC Seminar Series

On January 28, 2025, the inaugural session of the UNIDROIT Asian Transnational Law Centre (ATLC) Seminar Series took place at UNIDROIT’s headquarters in Rome, Italy, with both in-person and online participation. Focused on the theme Digital Assets and Their Legal Application and Development in Asia, the event brought together over 70 participants, creating a dynamic and inclusive platform for discussion.

The seminar began with a welcome speech by Prof. Ignacio Tirado, Secretary General of UNIDROIT, followed by an introduction by Mr William Brydie-Watson, Co-director of the ATLC. Prof. K. Berk Kapanci from MEF University, Türkiye, then delivered a keynote speech, exploring the core concept of “control” and its implications under the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law.

A panel discussion, moderated by Ms Theodora Kostoula, Legal Consultant at UNIDROIT, gathered a distinguished group of speakers, including Ms Giulia Previti, Legal Officer at UNIDROIT, Prof. Weixing Shen from Tsinghua University, Prof. Luca Di Donna from Sapienza University of Rome, and Ms Chi Wing Cheuk, Legal Officer at UNIDROIT. The panel delved into critical legal concepts such as “control” and “possession” within the context of digital assets, while also examining legislative practices related to digital assets across various jurisdictions. The discussion was followed by an interactive Q&A session, allowing participants to engage directly with the experts.

The ATLC Seminar Series is one of the major initiatives by the ATLC, designed to advance academic dialogue and foster collaboration in the field of international private law and commercial law, with a focus on UNIDROIT work areas and instruments. With a particular emphasis on bridging perspectives between Asia and the global scholarly community, the Seminar Series strives to deepen understanding and promote innovative approaches to contemporary legal challenges.
