UNIDROIT delivers MAC Protocol consultation workshop for Japanese stakeholders

On 25 September 2024, UNIDROIT co-hosted a consultation workshop with the Japanese Ministry of Justice (MOJ) and the Japan Construction Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) on the Mining, Agriculture and Construction (MAC) Protocol to the Cape Town Convention.

Held at Chuo University in Tokyo, the workshop brought together over 40 government officials, legal experts and private sector representatives to discuss the legal and economic impacts of the MAC Protocol, and its potential benefits and costs for Japan.  Chaired by Takahito Kawahara from the Japanese MOJ, the workshop featured presentations by UNIDROIT Secretary-General Ignacio Tirado, CEMA Executive Managing Director Satoru Koyama, Nippon Export and Investment Insurance Strategic Policy General Manager Yuichiro Akita, APEC Economic Committee SELI subgroup Chair Yoshihisa Hayakawa, Japan MAC Preparatory Committee representative Megumi Hara and UNIDROIT Senior Legal Officer William Brydie-Watson.
