UNIDROIT contributes to Transversal Skills Laboratory on “Management & Practice of International Contracts in the Foreign Direct Investments Sector”

On 16 April 2024, Legal Officer Philine Wehling delivered a lecture on the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (UPICC) at the Transversal Skills Laboratory on “Management & Practice of International Contracts in the Foreign Direct Investments Sector” coordinated by Professor Antonio Leandro from the University of Bari Aldo Moro.

The Transversal Skills Laboratory focuses on the role of contracts in the sector of foreign direct investments. Against the background of globalised markets, participants examine the growing phenomena of reshoring, nearshoring, and friend-shoring, as well as the ‘ESG’ impact on international business. The primary means to settle commercial and investment disputes are addressed, along with the impact of insolvency proceedings upon contracts devoted to implementing investments. The Transversal Skills Laboratory is organised by the University of Bari Aldo Moro and supported by UNIDROIT, the Southern Adriatic Sea Port Authority, and INSOL Europe.

During her lecture, Philine introduced the origin and content of the UPICC and reviewed their various applications. She discussed a data analysis of the UPICC’s uses, to then concentrate on the Principles influence on contract law design with a focus on the regulation of special economic zones.

The participation by UNIDROIT took place within the framework of a cooperation agreement concluded in 2023 between UNIDROIT and the University of Bari Aldo Moro to strengthen their cooperation in legal research and education.
