UNIDROIT and Central Asian countries to fight against illicit trafficking in cultural property

From 30 October to 1st November, UNIDROIT participated in a training workshop organised by the UNESCO Almaty Office to provide officials of Central Asian countries with the knowledge and skills to fight against the illicit trafficking in cultural property, to create a regional network of stakeholders involved in the protection of cultural heritage, and to raise the awareness among concerned professionals about the need to protect cultural heritage. Azerbaijan, Iran and Pakistan were also represented in the workshop.

UNIDROIT was represented by Ms Marina Schneider, Principal Legal Officer and Treaties Depositary, who presented and discussed with participants the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects and the UNESCO-UNIDROIT Model Provisions on State Ownership of Undiscovered Cultural Objects.

This was an opportunity to better explain the implementation of the Convention with Azerbaijan and Iran, already Parties to the 1995 Convention, and the benefits and procedure to become a Party to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
