On 10 November 2024, UNIDROIT co-hosted a symposium on warehouse receipt legislation in Shanghai, China, in collaboration with the National Warehouse Receipt Registration Center for Bulk Commodities and the Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (SHIAC). Focused on the UNCITRAL/UNIDROIT Model Law on Warehouse Receipts, the event brought together legal experts, industry leaders, and policymakers to explore strategic pathways for enhancing the legal framework for warehouse receipts in China. The symposium addressed pressing challenges in China’s bulk commodities market, including issues related to inventory control, ownership rights, and the need for standardised regulatory mechanisms and yielded practical and targeted recommendations for China’s legislative pathway forward.
Among the distinguished participants were Professor Ignacio Tirado, Secretary-General of UNIDROIT; Mr Ma Yi, Vice Chairman of the Council for the Promotion of International Trade Shanghai and Vice Chairman of SHIAC; Mr Lu Feng, Deputy General Manager of Shanghai Futures Exchange; Mr Wang Haibin, Chairman of the National Warehouse Receipt Registration Center for Bulk Commodities and President of CMST Development; Ms Wang Weijun, Secretary General of SHIAC; and Professor Henry Gabriel, Chair of UNIDROIT Model Law on Factoring Guide to Enactment Working Group.
