On June 6th, the third edition of the International Programme for Law and Development (IPLD) by UNIDROIT began with an inaugural online seminar. This year, the program welcomed 20 experts from 17 African countries, including judges, public attorneys, and legislative drafters, who will engage in a three-week discussion on the legal instruments of UNIDROIT – the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law.
The inaugural meeting was opened by Maria Chiara Malaguti, President of UNIDROIT, and Anna Veneziano, Deputy Secretary-General. Both emphasized how the program is designed as an exchange of experiences aimed at fostering international cooperation on legal issues.
Following this, Ambassador Giovanni Battista Iannuzzi from the Diplomatic Disputes Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation expressed Italy’s pride in hosting the IPLD – UNIDROIT program, highlighting its importance in promoting fruitful dialogue. South African Ambassador Nosipho Nausca-Jean Jezile also spoke, emphasizing South Africa’s key role in facilitating relations between UNIDROIT and African nations. She noted that the South African Parliament has already signed and ratified some of the proposed international instruments, including the Luxembourg Rail Protocol.
The Director of IPLD, Maria Teresa Iaquinta, then outlined the programme’s details and invited participants to introduce themselves, stressing the common goal: effectively implementing the unification of law to contribute to the economic growth of the countries.
The IPLD will be conducted online until June 15th, and will then continue in person in Rome at Villa Aldobrandini, the headquarters of UNIDROIT, from June 17th to July 5th. During these four intensive weeks, participants will have the opportunity to delve into and discuss various aspects of private and commercial law through seminars and practical sessions.
The initiative is funded by the Directorate General for Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (DGCS/MAECI).
