International Conference on Digital Asset Transactions and Legal Protection Held in Beijing

On 8 April 2025, the International Conference on Global Challenges in the Digital Era: Digital Asset Transaction and Legal Protection was successfully held in Beijing. The event was co-hosted by the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), the Beijing Arbitration Commission/Beijing International Arbitration Centre (BAC/BIAC), and the Beijing International Dispute Resolution Centre (BIDRC), with support from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law.

The conference brought together more than 400 participants from over 20 countries and regions, including renowned experts from UNIDROIT Working Groups, leading arbitrators, legal professionals, and academic scholars. The event provided a platform for legal experts, arbitrators, academics, and industry leaders to explore the complex challenges accompanying the rise of digital assets—ranging from legal uncertainty and cross-border regulatory compliance to data privacy and security risks. Through interdisciplinary dialogue, participants examined innovative solutions aimed at fostering a secure, transparent, and efficient governance framework for the digital economy.

In his keynote address, UNIDROIT Secretary-General Ignacio Tirado presented the substantive elements of the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law (the DAPL Principles). The DAPL Principles provide crucial guidance on issues such as the proprietary rights in digital assets, transactional rules, and dispute resolution under private international law. He emphasised that the development of the DAPL Principles was informed by inclusive regional engagement and best practices from across the digital industry.

The conference featured four strategic roundtable sessions, each addressing a specific topic: arbitration and dispute resolution, digital economy markets, international collaboration, and the legal frameworks in digital asset transactions. These multidisciplinary exchanges yielded valuable insights on integrating technological innovation with established legal principles to advance a secure, transparent, and efficiently governed global digital economy.

A highlight of the conference was the official announcement of the preparation of three new translations of the DAPL Principles translations into Chinese, Vietnamese, and Turkish by the UNIDROIT Asian Transnational Law Centre (ATLC). Marking a significant milestone for the DAPL Principles, these additional translations into Asian languages of UNIDROIT’s flagship instrument in the field of digital technology and law broaden the global reach of the instrument.

In closing, UNIDROIT conveyed its appreciation to its co-hosts, BAC/BIAC and BIDRC, for their invaluable partnership and seamless coordination in bringing the event to fruition. The Institute reaffirmed its commitment to fostering sustained international dialogue and collaborative research on the legal dimensions of digital innovation. Looking ahead, UNIDROIT emphasised its dedication to advancing inclusive, forward-looking legal frameworks that not only reflect the dynamic realities of the digital economy but also promote legal certainty, cross-border coherence, and equitable access to justice in an increasingly interconnected world.
