Cape Town Convention and Aircraft Protocol welcomes a new State Party

On 20 March 2025, the Republic of Benin became the 88th State Party to the Cape Town Convention and the 85th State Party to its Aircraft Protocol. Her Excellency,  Ms Corinne BRUNET, Ambassador of Benin to France personally deposited the instrument with the Secretary-General of UNIDROIT, Professor Tirado. The Treaty will enter into force for Benin on 1 July 2025, thus securing better access to finance in the aviation sector.

The Depositing Ceremony was preceded by a meeting, also attended by Deputy Secretary-General Professor Anna Veneziano and Principal Legal Officer and Treaty Depositary Ms Marina Schneider, in which the Ambassador was provided with clarifications on further UNIDROIT instruments within the Cape Town Convention system and beyond. The potential benefits of UNIDROIT Treaties in key sectors such as the rail sector and the mining, agriculture and construction sectors covered respectively by the Luxembourg Rail Protocol and the Pretoria MAC Protocol were outlined, as well as the benefits of Soft Law instruments such as the UNIDROIT-FAO-IFAD Legal Guide on Contract Farming and the UNIDROIT – IFAD Guide on Agricultural Land Investment Contracts.

The meeting was also an opportunity to discuss the benefits of accession to the UNIDROIT Statute by Benin.
