Next Chapter of UNIDROIT International Programme for Law and Development: Applications Open for the Balkans, Eastern Partnership Countries, Central Asia, and the Caucasus!

UNIDROIT is pleased to announce the 4th edition of the International Programme for Law and Development (IPLD), now expanding its reach to new regions. Supported by the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, for the first time, IPLD expands beyond Africa to focus on the Balkans, Eastern Partnership countries, Central Asia, and the Caucasus, opening new opportunities for legal experts from the selected countries*.

This expansion reflects the growing importance of legal harmonization and cooperation in the Balkans, Eastern Partnership countries, Central Asia, and the Caucasus, where evolving economic landscapes and regional integration efforts call for robust legal frameworks. By extending IPLD to these regions, UNIDROIT aims to support legal professionals in addressing contemporary challenges, fostering cross-border collaboration, and strengthening legal systems to drive sustainable development.

“With the launch of our IPLD Programme in the Balkans, Eastern Partnership, Central Asia, and the Caucasus, generously supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, it is my sincere hope to replicate the success of our existing IPLD Programme for Africa, which has already reached its fourth edition,” declared the UNIDROIT Secretary-General, Ignacio Tirado. “We are confident that raising awareness of UNIDROIT and its instruments at the regional level will enhance our existing partnerships and forge new relations as part of our outreach strategy, and that participants will benefit from a fruitful knowledge transfer and join our IPLD community.”

Support that the Honorable Edmondo Cirielli, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, underlines with his words:

“Italy is proudly a historical partner and supporter of UNIDROIT, as it is also paramount in our wider development cooperation strategy to strongly sustain and valorize International Organizations headquartered in our country. We salute and fully support the extension of the successful IPLD Programme to further countries that we greatly value and that we closely follow in the Balkans, the Eastern Partnership, Central Asia, and the Caucasus”.

This initiative is designed to equip legal professionals with the tools to drive meaningful reforms and support sustainable development. It empowers participants to shape their countries’ legal landscapes while fostering international cooperation and mutual understanding. The programme focuses on UNIDROIT’s legal instruments for the unification of private and commercial law, enabling participants to develop valuable skills for applying these tools at national, regional, and global levels.

IPLD offers a comprehensive learning experience, blending expert-led lectures, interactive workshops, case studies, and practical simulations delivered by distinguished judges, academics, legal practitioners, and UNIDROIT representatives. Participants will also develop individual projects, applying UNIDROIT legal instruments to real-world challenges in their respective countries.

The programme is open to judges, public lawyers, legal officers, and experienced legislative drafters from the target countries.

*Target countries: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
