UNIDROIT participates in the first G20 Culture Working Group’s webinar under South African Presidency

In the framework of the G20 Culture Working Group, under the South African Presidency, a series of four one-day Thematic Webinars are organised in April 2025 to harness the four priorities set forth by the Presidency through pooling expertise and good practices across the membership.

On 2 April 2025, UNIDROIT was invited to participate in the 1st Thematic Webinar of the Culture Working Group on Priority 1 “Safeguarding and restitution of Cultural Heritage to protect Human Rights”, to speak in one segment and to facilitate another segment. This action-oriented exercise aimed at knowledge sharing and exchange of good practices, identification of gaps ad priorities and formulation of recommendations to the G20 Culture Working Group.

Marina Schneider, Principal Legal Officer and Treaty Depositary, represented UNIDROIT and first presented the significant role of UNIDROIT instrument such as the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects and the Model Provisions on State Ownership of Undiscovered Cultural Objects in supporting the Working Group’s objectives and, as pivotal legal instruments, in embodying the principles of solidarity, equality, and sustainability – theme for South African’s G20 Presidency – principles that are at the very heart of the collective mission to safeguard cultural heritage and protect human rights.

Ms Schneider was also invited to facilitate the second speaking segment of the Webinar with interventions of representatives from G20 Members, Guest countries and international organisations, followed by an open discussion and the conclusion with the presentation of salient points to inform the reflection of the G20 Membership and feed into the final synthetic publication of the South African Presidency.
