UNIDROIT co-hosts consultation event on the implementation of the Cape Town Convention and its Protocols in Hong Kong, China

On 7 November 2024, UNIDROIT partnered with the Asia-Pacific Financial Forum (APFF) and Yingke Law Firm to co-organise a legal roundtable on “strengthening the global legal framework for asset-based finance through the Cape Town Convention (CTC) and its Protocols”. The key purpose of the event was to discuss how the extension of the CTC would create benefits for Hong Kong as a regional aviation and finance hub. The event was well-attended by over 40 experts in aviation finance, financial leasing, investment, asset management and legal practitioners in Hong Kong in person and online.

UNIDROIT was represented by Deputy Secretary-General Anna Veneziano, Principal Legal Officer Meiling Huang and Senior Legal Officer William Brydie-Watson. The event began with brief presentations by Professor Veneziano on the benefits of the CTC and its Aircraft Protocol, Mr Brydie-Watson on the extension of the CTC through the Rail Protocol and Mining, Agricultural and Construction (MAC) Protocol, and Mr Tejaswi Nimmagadda (Partner, Tiang & Partners) on how China extending the application of the Aircraft Protocol could be beneficial for Hong Kong.

The attendees then engaged in a fruitful discussion chaired by Mr Chris Wolhert from APFF’s Financial Infrastructure Development Network. The participants’ feedback demonstrated a strong interest in further exploration of how the CTC and its Protocols could benefit stakeholders in Hong Kong. The event’s stakeholder-focused dialogue provided a useful basis for future engagement and collaboration with interested parties for driving the implementation of the CTC in Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region.
