On 14 – 15 October 2024, the Centro de Estudios de Derecho, Economía y Política (CEDEP) organised a two-day Latin American Congress to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the UNIDROIT Principles on International Commercial Contracts. The event was hosted at the premises of the Central Bank of Paraguay.
The Congress was opened by José Antonio Moreno Rodríguez (CEDEP President and Member of the UNIDROIT Governing Council) Eugenio Jiménez Rolón (Member of the Supreme Court of Justice of Paraguay), Marco Aurelio González (Attorney General of Paraguay), and Delio Vera Navarro (President of the National Judges Association of Paraguay), and featured a rich programme articulated into 5 panels over two afternoons.
Day one featured a first panel chaired by UNIDROIT Secretary-General Ignacio Tirado, which addressed the current outlook of the UPICC based on its first 30 successful years of existence. The second panel focused on the challenges faced by States in arbitration, the role of attorneys general and judges, presented by Andrés Jana (founding partner of Jana & Gil Dispute Resolution), and chaired by attorney at law Bernardo Wayar Caballero (of Mexico).
Day two featured a presentation of the UNIDROIT – ICCWBO Project on International Investment Contracts by UNIDROIT President Maria Chiara Malaguti and ICC Institute of World Business Law (ICCWBO) President Eduardo Silva Romero, which introduced a panel on Investment Contracts and Investment Treaties chaired by international arbitrator Roger Rubio (of Peru). A final panel on Selected Topics in Contract Law and the Unidroit Principles chaired by Member of the Supreme Court of Justice of Paraguay Eugenio Jiménez Rolón.
Delegates were also invited to attend two workshops dedicated to Investment Contracts scheduled during the mornings of the Congress.
They were structured as a debate on complex, specific issues related to investment contracts taking into account the joint project between UNIDROIT and ICCWBO taking account of the contributions of the OAS.
Designed to generate important inputs for the next UNIDROIT – ICCWBO Working Group meeting scheduled in November, the workshops also involved the exhibitors invited to the congress, some Latin American members of the Consultative Committee UNIDROIT-ICCWBO joint project, as well as some Latin American UNIDROIT correspondents.
This hybrid event also saw the remote participation on behalf of UNIDROIT of President Maria Chiara Malaguti, Deputy Secretary-General Anna Veneziano, as well as Legal Officers Myrte Thijssen and Rocco Palma.
