The instrument of accession of the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention, together with the compulsory declarations, has been deposited by the Republic of Yemen with the Italian Government, Depositary of the Convention, on 7 October 2024. The Convention will enter into force for Yemen on 1 April 2025.
H.E. Dr. Mohammed Jumeh, Yemen’s Ambassador to UNESCO, signed the instrument of accession to the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention on behalf of the Yemeni Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With the implementation of this Convention, Dr. Jumeh noted that Yemen will gain the necessary legal support to recover cultural artifacts in case of illegal removal from the country.
This accession strengthens the legal framework to protect the heritage of Yemen and to fight against illicit trafficking in cultural objects.
By acceding to the Convention, Yemen adopts, for the future, specific mechanisms facilitating the restitution and return of stolen and illegally exported cultural objects.
Yemen becomes the 55th Contracting State to the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention.
