On 3 September 2024, the Asian Business Law Institute (ABLI), in cooperation with UNIDROIT, hosted a webinar on “Digital Asset Dynamics and Case Studies: Insights from China, Singapore and International Initiatives”. The event was attended by over 100 private practitioners, policy-makers and academics.
The webinar began with opening remarks from the UNIDROIT Secretary-General, Professor Ignacio Tirado. Professor Louise Gullifer (Hon) FBA (Rouse Ball Professor of English Law, University of Cambridge) provided a comprehensive overview of the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and Private Law and discussed key issues and concepts, including proprietary rights and control. The discussion continued between Professor Gullifer, Jiamin Leow (Partner, WongPartnership LLP), and Wenwen Zeng (Partner, Tian Yuan Law Firm). The speakers explored various topics, such as the definition of digital assets in Singapore and China, the legal status of such assets as property and their treatment by the courts of those countries, and the creation of security interest over such assets.
