Workshop on UNIDROIT Instruments and Projects for a delegation from Georgia

On 22 May 2023, UNIDROIT hosted a Workshop on UNIDROIT Instruments and Projects for a delegation from the Georgian Lawyers for Independent Profession, comprising judges, professors, legal aid lawyers, in-house counsel and practitioners.

UNIDROIT’s Deputy Secretary-General, Professor Anna Veneziano, together with Principal Legal Officer Ms Marina Schneider, Senior Legal Officer Mr William Brydie-Watson, and Legal Officers Dr Philine Wehling and Mr Kevin Lau, introduced the UNIDROIT working methodology and different UNIDROIT instruments, such as the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (UPICC) and instruments on securing access to credit, enforcement of judgments, and the protection of cultural property.

There was particularly lively dialogue on the UPICC, with Justice Shorena Tsikaridze, Judge of the Tbilisi Court of Appeal, making a presentation on how the Principles have been applied in judicial practice in Georgia to assist in resolving lacunae in domestic law and as a supplemental aid to the interpretation of contracts. The Workshop concluded with a discussion on how UNIDROIT instruments may contribute to legal reform in Georgia and other developing countries keen on modernising their legal regimes in accordance with international standards.
