On 25 February 2022, UNIDROIT participated in a Workshop on Responsible Contract Farming organised by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), the Liberia Ministry of Agriculture, the MAP Liberia Land Platform, the William N. Tolbert College of Agriculture and Forestry of the University of Liberia.
The workshop brought together policymakers, farmer organisations, civil society representatives and private sector actors from Liberia to discuss legal, policy and institutional innovations to support and promote contract farming, as an important inclusive business model for responsible investment in agriculture.
UNIDROIT’s Deputy Secretary-General, Professor Anna Veneziano, introduced the Institute’s work on Private Law and Agricultural Development while Mr Carlo Di Nicola (Senior Legal Officer) and Ms Priscila Andrade (Legal Officer) presented an overview of the UNIDROIT/IFAD Legal Guide on Agricultural Land Investment Contracts to showcase how responsible agricultural land investment may be promoted through various types of contracts.
Next, Ms Philine Wehling (Legal Officer) provided an overview of the development and content of the UNIDROIT/FAO/IFAD Legal Guide on Contract Farming. She explained the basic concept, advantages and challenges of contract farming, and then focused on the conceptual stages of the contract farming relationship as reflected in the Legal Guide, including contract negotiation and conclusion, performance, non-performance events, duration and dispute situations. The presentation was followed by a lively Q&A session with the participants concerning possible uses and challenges of contract farming within the context of Liberia’s existing legal framework.
The event also featured presentations by representatives of the Liberian government and the International Institute for Sustainable Development.
