On 15 December 2022, UNIDROIT held the 81st session of its General Assembly at its headquarters in Rome. Following opening words of welcome by the Secretary-General and the Representative of Italy, Chair of the General Assembly for 2021-2022, Min. Plenipotentiary Stefano Zanini (Head of Service for Legal Affairs, Diplomatic Disputes & International Agreements, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy), the General Assembly elected India as Chair of the General Assembly 2022-2023. Her Excellency, Dr Neena Malhotra, Ambassador of India to Italy therefore took the floor and chaired the proceedings.
The General Assembly was firstly provided with a comprehensive update on UNIDROIT’s activities in 2022 on legislative and non-legislative matters by the Secretary-General, which was met with expressions of praise from Member States. The General Assembly then heard the presentation of the proposals and recommendations of the Governing Council for the 2023-2025 Triennial Work Programme, which it then approved in full. Concerning the financial and administrative items on the agenda, the Chair of the Finance Committee, Mr Sam Rothenberg of the US Mission to the Rome based UN Agencies, provided a report on the recommendations of the Finance Committee. Based on such recommendations, the General Assembly approved the final modifications to the Budget and approval of the Accounts for the 2021 financial year, the adjustments to the Budget for the 2022 financial year, as well as the Draft Budget for 2023.
