  • Authorisation by the Governing Council of publication of the Official Commentary on the Unidroit Model Law on Leasing


  • At its 89th session, held in Rome from 10 to 12 May 2010, the Governing Council authorised publication of the Official Commentary on the Unidroit Model Law on Leasing prepared, pursuant to a Resolution passed by the Joint Session of the General Assembly and the Committee of governmental experts for the finalisation and adoption of a draft model law on leasing (held in Rome from 10 to 13 November 2008), by the Secretariat, in close co-operation with the Reporter to the Joint Session, the Chairman of the Committee of governmental experts and members of the Drafting Committee of the Joint Session. The Governing Council also authorised, subject to identification of the necessary funding, the holding of a programme of promotional seminars on the Model Law in those parts of the world for which it is principally intended, namely States with developing economies and economies in transition. The Governing Council further took note of the unofficial Arabic-, Chinese-, Russian- and Spanish-language versions of the Model Law.
  • First meeting of the Committee on Emerging Markets Issues, Follow-Up and Implementation established by the diplomatic Conference to Adopt a Convention on Substantive Rules regarding Intermediated.


  • The meeting, which will include a Colloquium on financial markets law ( 6 and 7 September ), is intended to examine the reception given to the 2009 Geneva Securities Convention in the various countries, consider concrete proposals for its promotion and future work by Unidroit in the area of financial markets law (Rome, 6 to 9 September 2010).
  • Cape Town Convention and Aircraft Protocol – Accession by New Zealand


  • On 20 July 2010 the Government of New Zealand’s instruments of accession to the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment and the Protocol to the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment on Matters specific to Aircraft Equipment were deposited with Unidroit. New Zealand made declarations under Articles 39(1)(a), 52, 53, 54(2) and 55 of the Convention, and Articles XXIX, XXX(1), XXX(3) and XXX(5) of the Aircraft Protocol. The Convention and the Aircraft Protocol will enter into force for New Zealand on 1 November 2010.   • On 30 June 2010, the Secretary-General of Unidroit and the Secretary General of OTIF issued a joint press release to announce the publication of a “Request for Proposals for the establishment and operation of the International Registry pursuant to the Luxembourg Rail Protocol.
  • Seminar Report – The European Union and the Cape Town Convention


  • On 26 November 2009, Unidroit hosted, at its Rome headquarters, a seminar entitled “The European Community and the Cape Town Convention”. The report of the seminar has now been finalised and is available from the "Cape Town Convention" page.
  • Unidroit Committee of governmental experts for the preparation of a draft Protocol to the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment on Matters specific to Space Assets


  • The Committee of governmental experts held its fourth session in Rome from 3 to 7 May 2010. The report on that session, prepared by the Unidroit Secretariat, is available on this web site at http://www.unidroit.org/english/documents/2010/study72j/cge-session4/cge-4-report-e.pdf .
    At its 89th session, held in Rome from 10 to 12 May 2010, the Unidroit Governing Council authorised the Secretariat to convene a fifth session of the Committee of governmental experts, which will be held in Rome from 21 to 25 February 2011. In line with the statements made in the concluding part of the fourth session regarding future work, the Secretariat will, moreover, be organising meetings of both the Informal Working Group of the Committee of governmental experts on limitations on remedies and the Informal Working Group of the Committee of governmental experts on default remedies in relation to components, as well as consultations with representatives of the international commercial space, financial and insurance communities, in Rome in the week commencing on 18 October 2010. The outcome of these meetings and consultations will be reported to all those to be invited to participate in the fifth session of the Committee of governmental experts in good time for that session
  • Cape Town Convention and Aircraft Protocol – Accession by the Kingdom of the Netherlands


  • On 17 May 2010 the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands’ instruments of accession to the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment and the Protocol to the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment on Matters specific to Aircraft Equipment for the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba were deposited with Unidroit. The Kingdom of the Netherlands made declarations under Articles 39(1), 52, 53 and 54(2) of the Convention, and Articles XXIX, XXX(1) and XXX(2) of the Aircraft Protocol. By virtue of the declarations made pursuant to Article 52 of the Convention and Article XXIX of the Aircraft Protocol, the Convention and Aircraft Protocol will apply in the following territorial units of the Kingdom of the Netherlands: the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. The Convention and the Aircraft Protocol will enter into force for the Kingdom of the Netherlands on 1 September 2010.
